Pachara Piyasongsoot (b. 1985) is a Thai artist born and raised in Bangkok. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture, and Graphic Arts at Silpakorn University. In his early works, Pachara explored themes of identity and memory, before shifting focus to social and political contexts, notably in his series Ghost (2013), which interprets the symbolism of color under the political crisis and the ideological concepts of “Nation, Religion, and Monarchy.”
In 2017, Pachara began developing works connected to real historical places, such as the village of Nabua, Nakhon Phanom, which holds significant importance in the history of political struggles, particularly during the state suppression in the Cold War period. This includes Red Gate, a site connected to the deaths of two electrical workers who were found hanged after a crackdown leading up to the October 6, 1976 event. Additionally, there are the cases of Ampon Tangnoppakul (Ah Kong SMS), who died in prison after being convicted under Article 112, as well as Nuamthong Praiwan, a taxi driver who took his own life as a form of protest against the 2006 coup. These events led to the creation of the Anatomy of Silence (2018) series, which examines the concept of silence and the erasure of history.
In 2020, Pachara became interested in the lives of workers in housing estates. He studied and compared the relationship between the living spaces of workers in urban housing estates and their rural hometowns in Kalasin Province. This led to the creation of the Eternity Village (2020) series, using light and shadow to tell the story, overlaying the landscapes of housing estates, such as tennis courts, basketball courts, and swimming pools, with those of their rural origins.
In 2021, he began exploring the influence of the military coup through the concept of power in landscaping, analyzing symbolic spaces such as Rajabhakti Park, the Government House Garden, and the Royal Cremation Ground. This led to the Harvest (2021) series, which was further expanded into a deeper exploration of the aesthetic of power expressed through the use of a limited color palette in Your Green is Mine (2023).
In 2024, Pachara revisited questions about his identity in relation to the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, which holds a direct connection to his own background. He explored the impact of the crisis, which led to the rise of the Sufficiency Economy philosophy and the collapse of postmodern Thai architecture. The crisis deeply affected his personal and artistic trajectory, highlighting the profound and lasting effects on his understanding of both his roots and the broader sociopolitical landscape through his painting works.
Currently, Pachara works as a full-time artist and has ongoing solo and group exhibitions both in Thailand and internationally. Key solo exhibitions include:
